Great cities are constantly making and remaking themselves. Bombay is no exception and not the least because of a superficial change of its name to Mumbai. Having long been India’s industrial, financial and entertainment heart, it wasn’t long before the physical effects of the country’s 20-year-old economic reform began to affect the very structure and feel of this seven-island-city.
As the old makes way for the new and radically alters the physical personality of Mumbai, among other things, we are undertaking a project called “Vanishing Bombay” to document and record the metamorphosis of the metropolis unfolding before our eyes.
The project by its very nature requires popular participation in order to ensure the widest possible coverage of the city’s transforming contours.
We invite Bombayites and Mumbaikars, depending on your preference, to send us information, audio-visual materials or anything that you think will help chart the changes taking place in all walks of life, including buildings, monuments, places, art, music, culture, movies and people in the city. Your profession has no bearing on your ability to contribute, and we solicit materials from all those who feel any degree of passion about the theme.
